Week of March 9:
This week we focused on the long e sound made by ey and y. We listened to many stories about how animals and people work together. A highlight of the week was a visit from Northwest Battle Buddies, two veterans and their support dogs! We learned about how dogs wearing a vest are working and those without a vest are not. Check out your child's folder for information on how we learned to approach and pet a dog who is not working.
In math, we "took a trip" to Antarctica, measuring ourselves for snowsuits and learning about Rockhopper and King penguins. We compared our height with those of the penguins and learned about the distinguishing characteristics of each type.
In Religion we began exploring what Lent is. We learned that we give, fast and pray during Lent and cited some ways we can do that in first grade. We continued learning about the Stations of the Cross.

We read folktales about how the elephant got its trunk, how beaver got a flat tail and how the bat got its wings.
In math, we used a life-sized number line that students put together. We learned how number lines can start and end with any number and go on for a long time. We also learned how they can help us add and subtract. We celebrated the 100th Day of school! Check out some of our work in your child's portfolio that was sent home. Your child also pretended to be 100 years old and imagined what this would look like!
In Religion we focused on "right versus wrong" and how we can ask for forgiveness. We learned the story of Zacchaeus and all about the Golden Rule.

Sneaky E came to our classroom too and turned a bunch of A's long! Can you believe he looks around for vowels and sometimes he jumps onto the end of words and takes the short vowels away, leaving long vowels in their place!? We focused on long A this week and look forward to watching for Sneaky E in the next few weeks.
We have been moving toward more addition strategies, using doubles and making 10 when possible. We have learned about Fact Families and have been identifying how addition and subtraction work together to make a fact family with all the same numbers. We even wrote story problems based on pictures!

This was an exciting week filled with more digraphs. We checked out ch, -tch, ph and wh and learned what sounds they make. We read a lot of stories with these sounds and practiced them often. We even learned when to use -tch versus ch at the end of a word! These are challenging letter combinations and we will continue to look for them. We encourage you to find them while reading and point them out with your child.
In Math we took an domino addition check point - a check in to see how well we are understanding addition. Using dominoes to learn how to add has given us the opportunity to play a variety of games!
We learned about the Liturgical Calendar this week, specifically Ordinary Time and have begun to learn about Advent. We look forward to the beginning of Advent next weekend!

Week of October 14:
This week, we looked carefully at the short e sound as it is spelled using an e and ea (e.g. bread). We read stories about community helpers that had loads of short e words. We began to explore making predictions while reading to engage more with our stories. We prepared for conferences by writing about what we have learned.
Our first unit in Bridges in Mathematics has come to a close. We demonstrated our understanding of number concepts by using our number racks and ten frames. You will receive more information on these tools soon!
We continued to review the prayers of the Rosary in Religion. We also explored the concept of how we can praise God. We practiced and performed a song called "Love One Another" during our Olweus kick-off assembly.

Week of September 23:
This week we took a break from learning short vowels to enter the world of L-blends. We learned that a blend is "two consonant friends who are seen and heard together." We practiced spelling, reading and writing with blends. We also wrote about our favorite changes that we see in the fall. Check out our writing on our hallway bulletin boards sometime next week!
In math we began to experiment with part, part, whole problems. We continued to practice representing numbers on our Number Rack and using ten frames. We took a break on Friday to make "Rock Around the Clock" clock crowns in honor of our Sock Hop.
In religion, we worked on painting pictures of our Guardian Angels in honor of the Feast of the Guardian Angels on October 2. We also began learning about the Bible.

Week of September 16:
We have been loving all we can read with the short i and sort a sounds! This week our focus was learning the short i sound while reviewing words with short a. While we read our stories, we focused on "making a picture" and "summarizing key details." We also experimented with reading with expression.
In Math, we continued to practice skip counting by 2s and 5s. We are now using our special "Number Rack" that allows us to manipulate beads much like a ten frame would. We even got to play a game called "Ten Frame Flash" in which we quickly looked at a number on a ten frame and tried to create it using our "Number Rack."
We got to take a trip over to the Church to look for special items we see while at mass. We took a look at the altar, the Easter Candle, the Baptismal Font, the pews, and much more.
We got to experiment with the vibrations made from sound this week in Science. We watched rubber bands and water move while listening to the sounds that could be made with them.
Social Studies gave us a window into school in the past and now. We paid attention to how school was different and the same!

Week of September 9:
This week in Language Arts we focused on the short a sound. All of our spelling words were short a words along with two of our sight words. Our theme for our stories was all about what we do in school every day. We continued to examine how to write and identify complete sentences. While listening to stories we did "check for understanding," asking ourselves who and what the story is about.
We continued to dig deep into skip counting by 2s and 5s in math. We looked for patterns on the Hundred Chart while skip counting. Whenever possible, practice counting by 2s and 5s with your child to continue to help recognize these patterns. We wrapped up the week by building our "Number Rack" which will reinforce recognizing patterns. We love working at our math "work stations," where we get to playfully explore number concepts and patterns while getting along with our friends.
After our first All School Mass and Weekly Mass, we are ready to begin to further understand what we see inside our church and other Catholic churches we visit. We began identifying some of the special things we see at church and will continue to learn more!

Week of September 3:
This week in Language Arts we reviewed all of the short vowels. Students reviewed words that had the short vowels and identified them in practice. We listened to some classic stories, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Jack and the Beanstalk and The Tortoise and the Hare. We learned the basics on fiction versus nonfiction. While listening to stories, we also focused on how we can ask who and what the story is about to "Check for Understanding," a comprehension concept we will revisit throughout the year.
In Math, we focused on skip counting by 2s and 5s. Students practiced the concept of 2s by looking at "twin pops," the popsicles that come as twins. We counted the popsicles and the sticks. We also learned counting by 5s and recording our counts by using tally marks.
In Religion, we learned that Jesus is sometimes called The Good Shepherd and He calls us by name. We made sheep to add to Jesus' herd on our bulletin board and painted a watercolor resist of our name. We discussed how as members of the Church, we are called to love one another, just like our school theme "love your neighbor." We made a class list of examples of neighbors and a list of how we can show love.
We created handwriting and writing samples for our year-end portfolio. It will be fun to see how much we grow and change throughout this year!
